Lucy meets Mr. Tumnus first after entering Narnia in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Lucy Pevensie discovers a lamppost in a snowy forest after walking through the wardrobe. There she meets Mr. Tumnus, a faun who lives in a cave and invites her to tea. His hospitality initially hides a serious problem: he has been ordered to report human visitors to the White Witch.
Mr. Tumnus changes his mind after speaking with Lucy. He helps her return to the lamppost and later suffers because he protected her. His decision establishes one of the novel’s central themes: moral courage can require rejecting an unjust command.
Readers sometimes remember Aslan as Lucy’s first important meeting in Narnia, but Aslan appears later. Edmund meets the White Witch after Lucy’s first visit, while Mr. Tumnus is the first Narnian character Lucy encounters.
