Malcolm is a mathematician specializing in chaos theory. In the first Jurassic Park film, he visits the proposed park as a skeptical consultant and warns that controlling complex living systems is impossible. His distinctive commentary makes him one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.

The 1997 sequel promotes Malcolm to the central human role. He travels to Isla Sorna after learning that dinosaurs have survived there, partly to rescue his daughter Kelly and partly to document the animals. The expedition becomes dangerous when InGen attempts to exploit the island’s dinosaurs.
