Which character does Ewan McGregor voice in Disney’s 2017 film Beauty and the Beast?

The story behind the answer

Ewan McGregor voices Lumière in Disney’s 2017 film Beauty and the Beast.

Lumière is the enchanted castle servant transformed into a candelabra. In the 2017 adaptation, McGregor performs the character’s spoken dialogue and singing, including the expanded live-action version of “Be Our Guest.” The role combines comic timing with the warmth expected from one of the castle’s welcoming servants.

The film uses digital effects to create Lumière and the other transformed household objects. Ian McKellen voices Cogsworth, the clock, while Emma Thompson voices Mrs. Potts, the teapot. These characters retain their familiar relationships from the 1991 animated film while receiving more elaborate visual treatment.

McGregor’s casting is sometimes confused with his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars or with the actor who voices Lumière in the 1991 film, Jerry Orbach. The two versions therefore feature different performers in the same iconic role.
