At the 1992 Academy Awards, Disney's Beauty and the Beast won two Oscars.
The film won Best Original Score for Alan Menken and Best Original Song for “Beauty and the Beast,” written by Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. Ashman had died in 1991, before the film's release, and the award was accepted in his memory alongside Menken's recognition.
Beauty and the Beast also made history as the first animated film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It did not win that category; The Silence of the Lambs won Best Picture at the ceremony.
The film received six nominations in total, including nominations for its title song in the original-song category and for its score. Its two victories helped demonstrate the growing awards recognition of feature animation.
