Which character becomes Brienne's squire in season 4 of "Game of Thrones"?

The character who becomes Brienne's squire in season 4 of "Game of Thrones" is Podrick Payne. Usually called Pod, he begins as Tyrion Lannister's young personal servant and later becomes an unexpectedly loyal companion to Brienne of Tarth.

Podrick first proves his worth during Tyrion's trial by combat in season 2, when he refuses a bribe from the corrupt official Ser Meryn Trant. In season 4, after Tyrion is imprisoned and Brienne searches for Sansa Stark, Pod asks to accompany Brienne. She initially considers him unsuitable, but eventually accepts him as her squire.

Their relationship becomes one of the show's gentler partnerships. Brienne trains Pod, while Pod's patience, decency, and practical knowledge repeatedly help them survive. The character is played by Daniel Portman, and the role is notable because Pod is more than comic relief: his loyalty connects several major storylines. A common mistake is naming Tormund or another of Brienne's later allies; neither becomes her squire.
