Which channel separates England’s Isle of Wight from the mainland?

The story behind the answer

The Solent separates England’s Isle of Wight from the mainland. It is a stretch of tidal water along the southern coast of England, near Hampshire.

The waterway has two principal arms, the eastern and western Solent, divided by the Isle of Wight and nearby shoals and islands. Portsmouth, Southampton and Cowes are among the important settlements and ports associated with it.

The Solent has long supported naval activity, commercial shipping and recreational sailing. Its sheltered waters helped Portsmouth develop into a major naval base, while Cowes became internationally known for yacht racing.

The Solent is often confused with the English Channel, which lies south of the Isle of Wight and separates southern England from France. The Solent is a local channel within the English coastal region, not the international sea passage.
