Which Chanel fragrance was created by Jacques Polge and launched in 1984?

The story behind the answer

Coco was created by Jacques Polge and launched by Chanel in 1984.

Coco was named for Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and became one of the fashion house’s major fragrances of the 1980s. Jacques Polge, Chanel’s house perfumer from 1978 to 2015, composed the fragrance. Its style is rich and warm, with oriental or amber-like facets alongside spices, florals, and resins.

The name creates an easy mix-up with other Chanel fragrances. Coco is not Chanel No. 5, which Ernest Beaux created in 1921, and it is not Coco Mademoiselle, a later fragrance introduced in 2001. The related names refer to different formulas and release dates.

Coco also helped demonstrate how a fashion house could build a fragrance family around its founder’s identity. Chanel later released flankers and concentrations connected to the Coco name, but the original perfume’s launch year remains 1984.
