Which CEO of Intel is credited with the 'Intel Inside' marketing campaign?

The story behind the answer

Andy Grove is the Intel CEO most closely credited with making the “Intel Inside” marketing campaign a defining part of the company’s brand.

Grove served as Intel’s president from 1979 to 1997 and as CEO from 1987 to 1998. During his leadership, Intel shifted from marketing mainly to computer manufacturers toward building recognition among consumers, who were often unfamiliar with the processors inside their PCs.

The campaign emerged from late-1980s discussions involving Intel and the computer channel, including MicroAge, and was rolled out broadly in the early 1990s. The idea was ingredient branding: persuade buyers to look for Intel processors when choosing a complete computer. Intel also helped fund participating manufacturers’ advertising, making the logo visible on packaging, machines, and commercials.

The campaign’s creative development involved Intel marketing executive Dennis Carter and advertising agency DahlinSmithWhite, so Grove did not personally invent every element. Still, he was the company’s chief executive and strategic leader when Intel adopted and expanded the campaign. Paul Otellini later led Intel, while Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore were founders rather than the CEO associated with this branding push.
