Akio Toyoda became president of Toyota Motor Corporation in 2009 and led the company during an important era for hybrid vehicles.
Toyota appointed Toyoda president in June 2009, succeeding Katsuaki Watanabe. As a member of the founding Toyoda family, he brought both family history and extensive experience in sales, overseas operations, and product strategy to the company’s top executive role.
Toyota’s hybrid story began before Toyoda became president: the first-generation Prius launched in 1997, and the technology was already central to Toyota’s environmental strategy. During Toyoda’s presidency, the third-generation Prius launched in 2009 and Toyota expanded its hybrid lineup globally.
The main mix-up is Takeshi Uchiyamada, widely associated with the Prius’s engineering development and sometimes called its father. Katsuaki Watanabe was Toyota’s president immediately before Toyoda, while Hiroshi Okuda led the company much earlier.
