Which CEO became CEO of Walmart in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Doug McMillon became Walmart’s CEO in 2014, succeeding Mike Duke as the retailer’s fifth chief executive.

Walmart announced McMillon’s selection in November 2013, and he formally took over on February 1, 2014. His appointment was notable because he had spent his entire professional career at Walmart, beginning as a teenage summer associate unloading trucks at a distribution center.

Before becoming CEO, McMillon led two major Walmart divisions. He served as president and CEO of Sam’s Club from 2005 to 2009, then ran Walmart International from 2009 to 2013. That international role gave him experience across markets including Canada, China, the United Kingdom and Latin America.

As CEO, McMillon emphasized e-commerce, store investment, worker training and higher wages as Walmart faced competition from Amazon, Costco and discount chains. The common mistake is choosing Sam Walton, Walmart’s founder, or Lee Scott and David Glass, both former CEOs. McMillon was the 2014 successor to Mike Duke.
