Which CEO of Ford Motor Company is credited with the 'One Ford' turnaround plan?

The story behind the answer

Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Company’s CEO, is credited with leading the “One Ford” turnaround plan. He became Ford’s president and CEO in September 2006 after a career as an aerospace executive at Boeing.

“One Ford” aimed to replace Ford’s fragmented regional approach with a more unified global strategy. The company concentrated on a coherent vehicle lineup, shared platforms, stronger quality, better fuel efficiency, and disciplined investment across markets. Mulally reinforced the plan through regular business reviews and a culture of openly reporting problems.

Ford also raised $23.6 billion in 2006 by mortgaging substantially all of its assets. That controversial move provided cash and a cushion before the Great Recession. Unlike General Motors and Chrysler, Ford avoided bankruptcy and a direct federal bailout during the 2008–09 crisis.

Mark Fields and James Hackett succeeded Mulally but did not originate the turnaround associated with “One Ford.” Bill Ford was executive chairman during Mulally’s tenure and hired him, but he was not the CEO credited with executing the plan.
