Which CEO of ExxonMobil served from 2006 to 2016?

The story behind the answer

Rex Tillerson was the ExxonMobil CEO who served from 2006 to 2016.

Tillerson was elected chairman and chief executive officer in January 2006, succeeding Lee Raymond. He had spent his entire professional career at Exxon and its predecessor companies, joining Exxon Company USA as a production engineer in 1975 and rising through technical, international, and corporate leadership roles.

His decade at the top covered a period of major energy-market change, including the commodity boom of the 2000s, the global financial crisis, and the sharp oil-price decline that began in 2014. ExxonMobil remained one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy companies, with operations spanning exploration, production, refining, chemicals, and fuels.

Tillerson announced his retirement in December 2016. Darren Woods was elected to succeed him effective January 1, 2017. A frequent quiz mistake is selecting Lee Raymond, who was ExxonMobil’s immediately preceding CEO, or Darren Woods, who became CEO after Tillerson.
