Which CEO led the turnaround of Chrysler and repaid its government loans in 2011?

The story behind the answer

Sergio Marchionne led Chrysler’s turnaround and oversaw repayment of its government loans in 2011. He became Chrysler’s chief executive after Fiat formed an alliance with the struggling automaker in 2009.

Marchionne pushed a rapid restructuring after Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy, combining Fiat’s engineering and manufacturing expertise with Chrysler’s American brands. The company refreshed vehicles, focused its divisions, and returned to profitability much sooner than many expected.

On May 24, 2011, Chrysler repaid its outstanding U.S. and Canadian government loans, more than six years ahead of schedule. The repayment followed refinancing and was widely presented as a milestone in the company’s recovery.

A common mix-up is confusing Marchionne with Lee Iacocca, who led Chrysler’s famous 1980s rescue. Bob Lutz was also a major Chrysler executive, but Marchionne was the CEO associated with the post-2009 turnaround and 2011 repayment.
