Which Catholic saint was the first native-born Korean Catholic priest?
Answer
Andrew Kim Taegon
Answer
Andrew Kim Taegon
Andrew Kim Taegon was the first native-born Korean Catholic priest.
Born in 1821 in Korea, Andrew Kim Taegon came from a Catholic family during a period when Christianity was heavily persecuted. He traveled to Macau for education and was ordained a priest in Shanghai in 1845. He then returned to Korea to serve a growing but underground Catholic community.
Kim was arrested in 1846 and executed by beheading near Seoul on 16 September of that year. He was 25. His death occurred during the Joseon-era persecutions, which also killed many other Korean Catholics and missionaries.
Pope John Paul II canonized Andrew Kim Taegon with 102 other Korean martyrs in Seoul in 1984. He is the patron saint of Korean clergy and is commonly remembered alongside the wider group of Korean martyrs, not as the only Korean saint.
