Which Catholic saint was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, alongside Teresa of Ávila?

Catherine of Siena was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, alongside Teresa of Ávila. Pope Paul VI made them the first women to receive this title in the Catholic Church.

Born in Siena in 1347, Catherine became a Dominican tertiary and was known for her mystical experiences, charitable work, and influence on Church affairs. She dictated her major spiritual work, The Dialogue, to her followers.

Catherine also played a role in urging Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome in 1377. She died in Rome in 1380 and was canonized by Pope Pius II in 1461. She is sometimes confused with Teresa of Ávila because both were named Doctors of the Church on the same day, but they were different saints from different centuries.

Catherine is also a co-patron saint of Europe and Italy. Her feast day is April 29.
