Which Catholic saint served as bishop of Hippo and wrote The City of God?

The story behind the answer

Augustine of Hippo served as bishop of Hippo and wrote The City of God.

Augustine was born in 354 in Thagaste, in Roman North Africa. After a career in rhetoric and years of philosophical and religious searching, he converted to Christianity through the influence of Ambrose of Milan and was baptized in 387.

He became bishop of Hippo Regius in 395 and remained there until his death. His major works include Confessions, an influential spiritual autobiography, and The City of God, written partly in response to the shock caused by the sack of Rome in 410.

Augustine’s writings shaped Western Christian theology on grace, sin, the Church, and history. He died in Hippo in 430 while the city was under siege by the Vandals. His feast day is 28 August, and he is one of the four original Latin Doctors of the Church.
