Which Catholic saint is traditionally honored as the fourth-century bishop of Myra associated with the origin of Santa Claus?

The story behind the answer

Saint Nicholas is the Catholic saint traditionally honored as the fourth-century bishop of Myra associated with the origin of Santa Claus.

Nicholas was a Christian bishop in the ancient city of Myra, in Lycia, a region of modern-day Turkey. Historical evidence about his life is limited, but Christian tradition remembers him for generosity, secret gift-giving, and concern for children and the poor.

His feast is celebrated on 6 December in many Christian cultures. Medieval stories about gifts placed secretly for people in need helped create the traditions connected with Saint Nicholas Day. Dutch traditions later carried the name Sinterklaas to North America, where it developed into Santa Claus.

Nicholas should not be confused with the fictional modern Christmas character. The saint was a bishop whose popular legends accumulated over centuries, including the famous story of rescuing three impoverished girls from being sold into slavery.
