Francis of Assisi is traditionally credited with receiving the stigmata in 1224 at La Verna.

Francis was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in Assisi, Italy, around 1181 or 1182. He gave up a wealthy future and embraced poverty, preaching repentance and care for creation. His followers became the Order of Friars Minor, commonly called the Franciscans.

According to Franciscan tradition, Francis received wounds resembling those of Christ during a retreat on Mount La Verna in September 1224. The event is known as the stigmata. It made him an especially important figure in Christian accounts of mystical participation in Christ’s Passion.

Francis died in 1226 and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, only about two years later. Padre Pio and Catherine of Siena are also associated with the stigmata, but Francis is traditionally regarded as the first recorded person to receive it.
