Which Catholic saint is known as the Apostle of Rome for his ministry in the city?

The story behind the answer

Saint Philip Neri is known as the Apostle of Rome for his ministry in the city. He spent most of his active priestly life serving Romans through spiritual direction, confession, preaching, and charitable work.

Philip was born in Florence in 1515 and moved to Rome in 1533. He studied and worked there before being ordained a priest in 1551. He became famous for welcoming people from many social backgrounds and for using conversation, music, prayer, and informal gatherings in pastoral work.

In 1575, Pope Gregory XIII formally approved the Congregation of the Oratory, which grew from Philip’s meetings. Oratorians lived in community but did not take the traditional religious vows of monks or friars.

Philip was canonized in 1622 alongside Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Ávila, and Isidore the Farmer. He is often portrayed smiling, but his ministry also involved rigorous prayer and care for Rome’s poor and pilgrims.
