Escrivá later developed the organization during periods of political upheaval in Spain and after the Second World War. Opus Dei received formal canonical recognition from the Catholic Church, becoming a personal prelature in 1982 under Pope John Paul II.

Escrivá died in Rome in 1975. Pope John Paul II canonized him on October 6, 2002. He is sometimes confused with Álvaro del Portillo, his successor as head of Opus Dei, who was beatified in 2014 but is not a canonized saint.
