Which Catholic saint co-founded the Discalced Carmelites with Teresa of Ávila?
Answer
Saint John of the Cross
Answer
Saint John of the Cross
Saint John of the Cross co-founded the Discalced Carmelites with Teresa of Ávila.
John of the Cross was born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez in 1542 in Fontiveros, Spain. He entered the Carmelite order and met Teresa of Ávila in 1567. Together they pursued a stricter interpretation of Carmelite religious life, emphasizing prayer, simplicity, and contemplative discipline.
Their reform created the Discalced Carmelites, a branch separate from the older, unreformed Carmelites. John also wrote major spiritual works, including Dark Night of the Soul and The Ascent of Mount Carmel. His writings use poetry and mystical symbolism to describe spiritual transformation.
The reform brought conflict, and John was imprisoned by unreformed Carmelites in Toledo in 1577. He escaped in 1578 and continued organizing the reform. Pope Benedict XIII canonized him in 1726, and Pope Pius XI declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1926.
