Which Catholic saint, a former slave from Sudan, became a Canossian religious sister in Italy?

The story behind the answer

Josephine Bakhita, a former slave from Sudan, became a Canossian religious sister in Italy.

Bakhita was born around 1869 in Darfur, in present-day Sudan. As a child, she was kidnapped and sold into slavery several times. She eventually came into the household of an Italian diplomat and was taken to Italy, where she lived with the Canossian Daughters of Charity in Venice.

Italian law recognized that she could not be forced to return to slavery. She was baptized in 1890, confirmed the same day, and later entered the Canossian order. For decades she served as a cook, sacristan, and porter at a convent in Schio.

Bakhita died in 1947. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 2000. Her feast day, 8 February, is observed by the Catholic Church as the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking.
