Saint Pio of Pietrelcina was the 20th-century Capuchin friar widely known as Padre Pio.

Born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, in 1887, he joined the Capuchin Friars and took the religious name Pio. He spent much of his ministry at San Giovanni Rotondo, where he heard confessions, celebrated Mass, and advised people who sought spiritual guidance.

Padre Pio was reported to have received the stigmata, wounds resembling those of Christ’s crucifixion, in 1918. The Church investigated reports connected with him during his lifetime, and the phenomenon remains closely associated with his popular devotion.

Pope John Paul II canonized Pio on 16 June 2002. His birth name, Francesco Forgione, is sometimes overlooked because “Padre Pio” became the name by which he was internationally known.
