Which Catholic pope declared Joan of Arc a patron saint of France in 1922?

The story behind the answer

Pope Pius XI declared Joan of Arc a patron saint of France in 1922.

Joan had been canonized two years earlier, on 16 May 1920, by Pope Benedict XV. The later declaration of patronage took place in 1922 during the pontificate of Pius XI, formally recognizing her special status as a patron of France.

Her canonization followed centuries of changing public memory. The 1456 rehabilitation trial had already overturned her condemnation, but the Catholic Church did not canonize her until the twentieth century. Her modern recognition was influenced by renewed historical study, French national memory, and devotion to her as a model of faith and courage.

Pius XI served as pope from 1922 to 1939. He should not be confused with Benedict XV, who canonized Joan, or Pius X, who beatified her in 1909.
