The cathedral was built on the site of Seville's principal mosque after Christian forces captured the city in 1248. Construction of the Gothic building began in the early fifteenth century, and the mosque's minaret was retained and transformed into the Giralda bell tower. The result combines Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.

Its enormous interior includes five naves, numerous chapels, and a central nave that reaches great height. The building's claim concerns volume, not simply floor area, length, or height.
