Coventry Cathedral was built beside the ruins of a church destroyed during the Coventry Blitz.

The medieval Cathedral Church of Saint Michael was badly damaged by German bombing on the night of 14 November 1940. Its roof burned away, leaving the surviving tower, spire, and outer walls as a powerful war memorial. Instead of rebuilding the old structure, Coventry commissioned a new cathedral beside the ruins.

The modern cathedral was designed by Basil Spence and consecrated in 1962. Its architecture combines concrete, stone, stained glass, tapestry, and sculpture. The ruins were deliberately retained, and the two buildings function together as one cathedral complex.

A major symbol of reconciliation is the charred cross made from roof timbers after the bombing. Coventry Cathedral later became closely associated with international reconciliation and peace initiatives, especially through links with other war-damaged cities.
