Wawel Cathedral in Kraków contains the Sigismund Chapel and Poland’s famous Sigismund Bell.

The cathedral, formally the Royal Archcathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslaus, stands on Wawel Hill. It has served as Poland’s coronation church and principal royal burial site. Kings, queens, bishops, and national heroes are buried in its chapels and crypts.

The Renaissance Sigismund Chapel was built in the sixteenth century for King Sigismund I the Old and is recognized for its golden dome. The Sigismund Bell, cast in 1520 by Hans Beham of Nuremberg, hangs in a separate tower and traditionally rings on major national and religious occasions.

The bell is often called the Zygmunt Bell in Polish. It should not be confused with the smaller bells of St Mary’s Basilica in Kraków, whose hourly trumpet signal is another famous symbol of the city.
