St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna is famous for its multicolored roof covered with about 230,000 glazed tiles.

The patterned roof is one of Vienna’s most recognizable landmarks. Its tiles form the Habsburg double-headed eagle and the coats of arms of the city of Vienna and Austria. The steep roof rises above the Gothic cathedral’s nave and choir, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding urban streets.

The cathedral’s origins reach back to a Romanesque church founded in 1137. Much of the present Gothic structure was built during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Its south tower, known as the Steffl, rises 136.7 metres and is a defining feature of Vienna’s skyline.

The roof was badly damaged by fire at the end of World War II and was subsequently reconstructed. The cathedral is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna.
