Which cathedral in Venice is famous for the four bronze horses displayed above its façade?

The story behind the answer

St Mark’s Basilica in Venice is famous for the four bronze horses displayed above its façade.

The basilica is dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist, whose relics were traditionally brought to Venice from Alexandria in 828. The present building was begun in the eleventh century and developed through later additions and decorations.

The Quadriga, or group of four horses, is an ancient sculpture whose exact origin and date remain debated. Venice placed the horses on the basilica after the sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The originals are now kept inside, while replicas appear outdoors.

St Mark’s Basilica served as the Doge’s chapel rather than the ordinary cathedral of Venice. The city’s formal cathedral is San Pietro di Castello.
