Seville Cathedral includes the Giralda as its bell tower.

The Giralda began as the minaret of the Almohad mosque that stood on the site before the cathedral. After Seville was conquered by Castile in 1248, the mosque was converted for Christian worship. Much of the mosque was later demolished, but its minaret survived and was adapted as a cathedral bell tower.

The cathedral itself was built mainly during the 15th and early 16th centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Mary of the See and is one of Spain’s best-known Gothic monuments. The Giralda’s lower sections retain Almohad architectural features, while its upper Christian additions include the belfry and the bronze statue known as El Giraldillo.

A common mix-up is to call the Giralda a separate building. It is historically a minaret, but today it forms the bell tower of Seville Cathedral. The cathedral complex also includes the Patio de los Naranjos and the tomb traditionally identified as that of Christopher Columbus.
