The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian in Rio de Janeiro has a conical design inspired by Mayan pyramids.

The cathedral was designed by Edgar Fonseca and built between 1964 and 1979. Its broad truncated-cone form was influenced by the geometry of Mayan pyramids, but the building is a modern concrete interpretation rather than a reconstruction of an ancient temple.

Four enormous stained-glass windows rise from the floor toward the ceiling. They fill the interior with colored light and emphasize the cathedral’s vertical structure. The building can accommodate many thousands of worshippers and differs sharply from Rio’s older colonial churches.

The cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. It is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the city’s patron saint, whose name also appears in the Portuguese title São Sebastião.
