Which cathedral in Mexico City was built beside the Templo Mayor and is the largest cathedral in the Americas?

The story behind the answer

The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral was built beside the Templo Mayor and is the largest cathedral in the Americas.

Construction began in 1573 on the former Aztec ceremonial precinct, after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan. The building developed over several centuries, so its architecture combines Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements.

The cathedral occupies part of Mexico City’s historic central square, the Zócalo. Its foundations were built on soft former lakebed, making uneven settlement a persistent engineering challenge.

Because construction continued for so long, the cathedral does not represent a single architectural style. Its long history also connects the modern city with both the colonial capital and the earlier Mexica city beneath it.
