Which cathedral in Florence contains Brunelleschi’s famous dome?

Florence Cathedral contains Filippo Brunelleschi’s famous dome.

The cathedral, formally Santa Maria del Fiore, was begun in 1296 under the architect Arnolfo di Cambio. Its enormous crossing remained open for decades because builders had not solved how to span it safely. In 1420 Filippo Brunelleschi won the competition to construct the dome, and the work was completed in 1436.

Brunelleschi’s dome is a double-shell structure supported by carefully arranged masonry, including distinctive herringbone brickwork. It became one of the great engineering achievements of the Renaissance and transformed the skyline of Florence.

The dome is often mistakenly credited with designing the entire cathedral. Brunelleschi designed the dome, not the original church. The cathedral complex also includes Giotto’s campanile and the Baptistery of Saint John, but both are separate buildings.
