The Gothic cathedral was built over several centuries in Antwerp, beginning in 1351. Its immense north tower, completed in 1521, became one of the city’s defining landmarks, while the planned south tower was never finished. The building is the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries.

Rubens was closely associated with Antwerp, and the cathedral preserves several of his monumental paintings. The Raising of the Cross and The Descent from the Cross were created for altars in the church and are among the most famous artistic treasures connected with the cathedral.

The building is sometimes called simply Antwerp Cathedral, but its formal English name is the Cathedral of Our Lady. It should not be confused with Brussels’ Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, another major Belgian Gothic church.
