Which Caribbean island is home to the capital city of Nassau?

The story behind the answer

New Providence is the Bahamian island home to Nassau.

Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas, occupies much of New Providence Island. New Providence is one of the country’s most populated islands and its main centre of government, business, tourism, and international transport. Nassau sits on the island’s northern coast, facing Paradise Island across a narrow channel.

The Bahamas is an archipelago of hundreds of islands and cays, so Nassau is not itself an island. Paradise Island is also separate from New Providence, although bridges connect it to Nassau and it is often grouped with the capital’s resort area.

New Providence has a relatively low landscape compared with volcanic Caribbean islands. Its importance comes less from mountain scenery than from its strategic harbour, urban concentration, and position near the Florida Straits.
