Which Caribbean island is home to the Arecibo Observatory’s former radio telescope?

The story behind the answer

The Caribbean island home to the former Arecibo Observatory radio telescope is Puerto Rico.

The Arecibo Observatory was built near the city of Arecibo in Puerto Rico. Its enormous radio telescope became one of the world’s most recognizable astronomy facilities and supported research into planets, pulsars, asteroids and Earth’s atmosphere.

The telescope’s 305-metre dish was completed in 1963 and was later upgraded. The structure suffered major damage from cable failures and collapsed in December 2020. The observatory site has continued to support education and scientific work, even though the iconic dish no longer operates.

Arecibo is sometimes associated with fictional space stories, but it was a real research facility. Puerto Rico is an island territory of the United States in the Greater Antilles.
