Antigua is the Caribbean island home to St. John’s, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda.
St. John’s lies on Antigua’s northwest coast and is the country’s commercial, administrative, and principal port city. The settlement grew around a sheltered harbor and became an important center during the island’s British colonial period.
Antigua and Barbuda is an independent country made up mainly of Antigua, Barbuda, and the small uninhabited island of Redonda. Antigua is by far the more populous and developed island, while Barbuda is known for its low-lying landscape, wildlife, and pink-sand beaches.
St. John’s is sometimes confused with Saint John in the U.S. Virgin Islands or with St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the Caribbean, the apostrophe and the reference to Antigua and Barbuda identify the national capital clearly.
