Which Caribbean island is also called the Isle of Youth?
Answer
Isla de la Juventud
Answer
Isla de la Juventud
Isla de la Juventud is the Caribbean island also called the Isle of Youth.
Isla de la Juventud, meaning “Island of Youth” in Spanish, is Cuba’s second-largest island. It lies south of Cuba’s main island across the Gulf of Batabanó and is administered as part of Cuba. Its principal settlement is Nueva Gerona.
The island has had several historical names. During the colonial period it was known in English as the Isle of Pines, and the Spanish name Isla de Pinos was widely used. Cuba officially renamed it Isla de la Juventud in 1978.
The island’s name is sometimes confused with Cuba itself, which is also known by historical names such as Juana. Isla de la Juventud is a separate island within the Cuban archipelago, not an alternative name for Cuba.
