Which Caribbean island contains Pico Turquino, Cuba’s highest mountain?

The story behind the answer

Cuba contains Pico Turquino, the highest mountain in the Caribbean island nation of Cuba.

Pico Turquino reaches 1,974 metres above sea level in the Sierra Maestra range of southeastern Cuba. The mountain lies within a rugged region known for steep slopes, forests, and historical associations with the Cuban Revolution.

The name “Turquino” is commonly used for both the peak and nearby geographical features. Cuba’s eastern mountains are much higher and more dramatic than the low-lying western parts of the island, including the landscapes around Havana.

Pico Turquino is not the highest mountain in the entire Caribbean. That distinction belongs to Pico Duarte on Hispaniola. The two peaks are therefore easy to mix up when comparing Caribbean geography, but Pico Turquino is Cuba’s national high point.
