Which Caribbean country became a republic on 30 November 2021?

The story behind the answer

Which Caribbean country became a republic on 30 November 2021? Barbados became a republic on that date.

On 30 November 2021, Barbados replaced the British monarch as its head of state and became a parliamentary republic. The change was part of the country’s constitutional process and coincided with its 55th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom.

Dame Sandra Mason, who had previously served as governor-general, became Barbados’s first president. Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s government led the transition, while Barbados remained a member of the Commonwealth. Becoming a republic therefore changed the country’s constitutional head of state without ending its international Commonwealth relationships.

The date can be confused with Barbados’s independence day, which is 30 November 1966. That earlier date marks independence; 30 November 2021 marks the later change from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. Jamaica, The Bahamas and Saint Lucia remained constitutional monarchies at that time.
