The Northumberland Strait separates Prince Edward Island from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

This arm of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence lies between Prince Edward Island to the north and the mainland provinces to the south. Its relatively shallow waters are known for warm summer temperatures compared with other Gulf waters.

The Confederation Bridge crosses the strait between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Opened in 1997, it is one of the world’s longest bridges over ice-covered waters.

The strait is distinct from the Strait of Canso, which separates Cape Breton Island from mainland Nova Scotia, and Cabot Strait, which lies between Cape Breton Island and Newfoundland.
