Which Canadian strait separates Cape Breton Island from mainland Nova Scotia?

The story behind the answer

The Strait of Canso separates Cape Breton Island from mainland Nova Scotia.

The narrow marine passage lies in eastern Canada between the mainland and Cape Breton Island. It connects Chedabucto Bay to the south with St. George’s Bay and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence to the north.

The Canso Causeway was completed in 1955 across the strait, creating a permanent road and rail link to Cape Breton Island. A lock beside the causeway allows ships to pass between the connected waters.

The Strait of Canso is often confused with Cabot Strait, the much larger passage between Cape Breton Island and Newfoundland. Northumberland Strait instead lies between Prince Edward Island and the mainland.
