Which Canadian province gives its name to a time zone at UTC-03:30?

The story behind the answer

Newfoundland gives its name to Canada’s UTC−03:30 time zone.

Newfoundland Time is 3 hours 30 minutes behind Coordinated Universal Time during standard time. During daylight saving time, clocks move forward to UTC−02:30. It is the only active half-hour-offset time zone in the Americas.

The zone is based on mean solar time at the meridian 52°30′ west of Greenwich. Although the province is officially Newfoundland and Labrador, the time zone retains the shorter historic name “Newfoundland,” reflecting the island where the unusual offset is most strongly associated.

The time zone is not used uniformly across every part of Labrador in practice. It is observed throughout Newfoundland and on southeastern Labrador communities, while other Labrador communities use Atlantic Time. This geographic detail is why the zone’s name can be more precise than the province’s full modern name.
