Toronto hosted WrestleMania VI in 1990, the first WrestleMania held outside the United States.
The event took place on April 1, 1990, at the SkyDome, now known as Rogers Centre. Its main event was promoted as “The Ultimate Challenge,” with WWF Champion Hulk Hogan facing Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior in a title-versus-title match.
The Ultimate Warrior won and became the only wrestler to hold both championships simultaneously under that match’s stipulation. WrestleMania VI also featured appearances by celebrities and several major WWF stars, including Andre the Giant, Mr. Perfect and Dusty Rhodes.
WrestleMania later returned to Canada for WrestleMania X8 in Toronto in 2002. That event is especially remembered for The Rock versus Hulk Hogan, but WrestleMania VI was the first edition to cross the United States border.
