Which Cambridge university did C.S. Lewis join as a professor in 1954?
Answer
Cambridge University
Answer
Cambridge University
C.S. Lewis joined Cambridge University as a professor in 1954.
In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University. The appointment created a formal connection with Cambridge while he continued living near Oxford and retaining links to Oxford’s literary world.
His Cambridge position recognized his authority as a scholar of English literature, especially medieval and Renaissance texts. Lewis had already spent decades at Oxford, where he taught at Magdalen College and wrote both academic studies and popular books.
The move did not end his writing career. During his Cambridge years, he continued publishing fiction, criticism, and religious work. His final Narnia book, The Last Battle, appeared in 1956, two years after his Cambridge appointment.
