Which Cambridge college did Jane Goodall attend for her PhD?

The story behind the answer

Jane Goodall attended Newnham College, Cambridge, for her PhD.

Goodall entered the University of Cambridge in 1962 to study for a doctorate in ethology, despite not having first completed a bachelor’s degree. She was among the small number of students permitted to pursue a Cambridge PhD through this route, reflecting the strength of her practical research and Louis Leakey’s support.

At Newnham College, she developed the academic foundation for her thesis, Behaviour of Free-Living Chimpanzees. Robert Hinde supervised the work, which drew on Goodall’s first five years observing chimpanzees at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. She completed the doctorate in 1966.

Newnham is one of Cambridge’s historic women’s colleges. Goodall is also associated with Darwin College, where she later became an honorary fellow, but Darwin was not the college she attended for her PhD. Likewise, Trinity and Girton were not her Cambridge college for this degree.
