Goodall was the eighth Cambridge PhD student admitted without first earning what?

The story behind the answer

Goodall was the eighth Cambridge PhD student admitted without first earning a bachelor’s degree. Her unusual academic route reflected both her exceptional field experience and the support of palaeontologist Louis Leakey.

Goodall had no university degree when Leakey sent her to Cambridge in 1962 to pursue doctoral research in ethology, the scientific study of animal behaviour. Cambridge allowed her to study for a PhD despite the absence of the usual undergraduate credential. She joined Newnham College and worked under zoologist Robert Hinde.

Her dissertation, completed in 1966, was titled “Behaviour of Free-Living Chimpanzees.” It drew on her first five years studying chimpanzees at Gombe Stream in what is now Tanzania. The distinction is sometimes misstated as admission without a master’s degree, but the notable exception concerned the missing bachelor’s degree. Goodall’s field observations, rather than a conventional academic ladder, had already made her an important emerging primate researcher.
