Which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis join as a professor in 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis joined Magdalene College, Cambridge, as a professor in 1954.

In 1954, Lewis left Oxford for Cambridge University after being appointed the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English. He became a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he taught until his retirement in 1963.

This appointment is often confused with Lewis’s earlier connection to Magdalen College, Oxford. The names are similar, but they are different colleges at different universities. Lewis spent most of his earlier academic career at Magdalen College, Oxford, while his final university position was at Magdalene College, Cambridge—the Cambridge college is spelled with an extra “e.”

Lewis’s Cambridge years were relatively brief compared with his Oxford period, but they were professionally significant. He continued writing, lecturing, and corresponding until his death in 1963, remaining associated with medieval and Renaissance literature as well as Christian apologetics.
