Which Cambridge college did C.S. Lewis join after leaving Oxford in 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis joined Magdalene College, Cambridge, after leaving Oxford in 1954.

In 1954, Lewis was appointed the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. He became a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he taught and lived during the final years of his academic career. The appointment gave him a university position better suited to his scholarly interests in earlier English literature.

This college is Magdalene with an “e” at the end, and it is different from Magdalen College, Oxford, where Lewis had taught since 1925. The similar names often cause confusion in biographies and trivia questions.

Lewis continued writing and lecturing after moving to Cambridge. His Cambridge period included the publication of works such as Surprised by Joy and Till We Have Faces, while his public reputation as a Christian author and broadcaster continued to grow.
