Which Cambridge college became C.S. Lewis’s academic home from 1954 until his death?
Answer
Magdalene College
Answer
Magdalene College
Magdalene College became C.S. Lewis’s Cambridge academic home from 1954 until his death.
In 1954, Lewis left Oxford and became the first holder of the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. He was a fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he continued teaching and writing until his death in 1963.
The college’s name is pronounced differently from Oxford’s Magdalen College and is spelled with a final “e.” Lewis’s move did not end his connection with Oxford immediately in the cultural sense: many of his friendships and literary associations remained rooted there. Nevertheless, Magdalene College, Cambridge, was his principal academic institution during the final nine years of his life.
